Morning has broken hymn lyrics4/8/2024 It had been arranged in the 1927 Church Hymnary (Revised Edition) by David Evans (1874-1978). It was first printed in the 1888 Songs and Hymns of the Gael edited by Lachlan Macbean, with the words of a nativity hymn, "Child in a Manger, Infant of Mary," that had been written by Mary M. This melody had been noted down by Alexander Fraser from the singing of a wandering Scottish Highland minstrel. In 1931, the editors of Songs of Praise, Percy Dearmer, Ralph Vaughan Williams, and Martin Shaw, asked Miss Farjeon to provide a poem on the theme of thanksgiving for each day as it comes to fit the unusual meter of a traditional Gaelic tune (Bunessan). Educated privately, she published her first book, Nursery Rhymes of London Town, in 1916, and went on to produce approximately eighty other works, such novels, plays, poems, music, and children’s books. Her two younger brothers, Joseph and Herbert Farjeon, became writers, while the eldest, Harry Farjeon, was a composer.
